What would you like to know about Dr Steve Lyons?
Q: What is your favorite kind of weather?
A: My favorite weather are the Santa Ana winds of Southern California, I grew up in them and remember some of my best surfing days while these offshore winds were hollowing.

Q: What sports or physical activities do you play or participate in?
A: I was a runner in college and an avid surfer in California and in Hawaii. I had a track & field scholarship in college and won many college races and have run distances from the 400 meters to the marathon. I think I still hold the Hawaii state 600 meter record. I was close to going to the US Olympic trials in Los Angeles in 1980 to run the 800 meters, but even if I would have made that qualifying time, I would very likely not have made the US Olympic team. My best time was around 1 minute and 48 seconds.

Q: What are favorite vacation spots?
A: My all-time favorite is New Zealand it is a gorgeous country, and let me say that I have compared it to many places in the world as I have been all over the World with work and travel from Europe, to the Middle East to India to Tierra Del Fuego on the southern point of Argentina to southeast Asia. Of course Hawaii is a close second; I lived there for more than 8 years.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A: The chance to provide to The Weather Channel viewers the best possible forecasts and information available through any TV, media, or website. I really enjoy meeting our many viewers in the off-season when I travel to their coasts to give talks. I also am happy The Weather Channel gives me time to work on my hurricane models in the off-season so we can provide even better forecasts of hurricane impacts next hurricane season!

Q: What is one fact people may be surprised to know about you?
A: I am far from the reserved, bald senior hurricane expert on TV. I play many sports and dodge sky rockets on the 4th of July. I love animals and have a kind heart for every one of them I see.

Q: Why I love Winter:
A: I love winter for a few reasons. First I know no one in the U.S. is going to suffer from the impacts of a hurricane for a while. I love winter because I spend some time snow skiing with my family in the mountains of New Mexico in some years. I love winter because it can be quiet and northern birds visit my neighborhood and like old friends we meet on walks with my dogs. I love winter because with all tree leaves gone it gives me a different perspective on my neighborhood, my community and my city in general; I see things that I cannot see through the leaves in summer. I love winter because it brings large waves to many surfing beaches I used to haunt; this brings back many great surfing memories. I love winter because of the special holidays that occur in it. I love winter because it makes me miss and appreciate my favorite season (summer) even more!
